This bust from Great Grimoire captures a portly, fur-robed merchant lord of unmistakable authority. His broad, mustachioed face carries the expression of a man who has survived a hundred negotiations he probably shouldn't have, and his layered robes — detailed with diamond-pattern embroidery and heavy clasp fastenings — speak to old money and older contacts. Two small wyverns clamber across his shoulders and turban, one rearing up with wings spread behind his head, the other held almost casually in one hand. Whether these creatures are pets, familiars, or stock-in-trade is left deliberately ambiguous — which is exactly the kind of detail that makes an NPC stick in a player's memory.
As a display bust rather than a combat miniature, this piece is built for painters and collectors who want to explore texture, fabric, and creature detail in a single composition. The contrast between the merchant's rich clothing and the rough, scaled bodies of the wyverns gives painters a wealth of techniques to explore — from smooth blends on silk to freehand diamond patterns and the fine membrane work of the wyvern wings. The bust is mounted on a tiered plinth base, making it shelf-ready straight from the paint station.
Well suited to adventurers who:
- Want a substantial display project that rewards detailed brushwork
- Are building a collection of characterful fantasy busts
- Need a visually striking NPC to anchor a merchant guild, dragon trade cartel, or black market encounter
- Are looking for character inspiration for a Warlock with a draconic patron, or a Rogue with very unusual contacts
Encounter Hook:
The party has been tracking stolen dragon eggs for three sessions. The trail ends in a spice merchant's back room, where a broad-shouldered man in layered robes looks up from his ledger — and one of the two wyverns on his shoulders fixes them with a knowing stare. "I wondered when someone would come asking," he says, without surprise. "Shall we discuss terms, or would you prefer to do this the other way?"
