Dr Vorthem Rauk is not merely a villain; he is an institution of dread. This diorama-style sculpt from Primal Collectibles' Legacy of Blood range depicts the deranged doctor mid-triumph, apron-clad and cackling, one hand raised in glee as his hulking, chain-bound prisoner strains against an iron restraint board beside him. A squat mechanical contraption — all pipes and riveted panels — sits at the doctor's feet, hinting at experiments far beyond the reach of any healer's oath. The composition tells a story before a single word of narration is spoken.
The sculpt is rendered in extraordinary detail across two figures: the doctor's goggled, gleeful face is a portrait in madness, while the prisoner's raw musculature and bound, collar-strapped form conveys both fury and helplessness. Two pose variants are available — one with the restraint board tilted at an angle (the doctor exultant beside his captive), and a second in which the board stands upright and the doctor gestures dramatically at his creation. Both capture the same chilling dynamic from different theatrical angles. This is a display-worthy centrepiece as much as it is a tabletop encounter piece.
Perfect for adventurers who:
- Run gothic horror or Ravenloft-adjacent campaigns and need a truly unsettling antagonist
- Want a diorama-quality villain miniature that doubles as a display shelf showpiece
- Are building a dungeon laboratory, mad alchemist's lair, or castle torture chamber encounter
- Love painting complex, narrative multi-figure compositions with rich storytelling detail
- Need a memorable boss NPC that communicates menace through sculpt alone
Encounter Hook:
The party was hired to retrieve a missing soldier — last seen entering Castle Rauk three weeks ago. When they breach the lower laboratory, they find him: still alive, still chained to the board, and whispering that the doctor has been kind enough to explain every stage of the procedure. The screaming starts when he realises they've triggered the alarm.
This miniature is scaled to 32mm and comes as separate components (figures and base) which can be assembled with a small amount of glue. The sculpted base forms an integral part of the composition and the figures are designed to interact with it — the base option is strongly recommended. Supplied unpainted and ready for priming. As with all hand-finished pieces, minor marks from support removal may occasionally be present; these are easily tidied before painting.
