Dinosaurs are fearsome enough when they're fully grown — but there's something uniquely unsettling about meeting one the moment it hatches. This miniature captures that instant of violent emergence: a hatchling dinosaur bursting from its cracked egg, jaw wrenched wide, rows of teeth on full display, and one clawed hand already gripping the broken shell as if it's already measuring up its first meal. A single bulging eye stares upward with an intensity that makes it very clear this creature was born predatory.
The sculpt is packed with character. The textured egg shell is beautifully rendered, with cracks and crazing spreading across the surface under the weight of the hatchling's emergence. Loose fragments of shell scatter across the base alongside what appears to be nest material — all of it combining to place this moment firmly in a wild, dangerous nest site. The hatchling's body is compact but powerful, the skin wrinkled and taut, with small growths or scutes along the back visible from behind. A distinctive fin or crest rises from the top of the skull, adding to the creature's alien, predatory quality.
Whether you're running a jungle expedition gone wrong, a prehistoric wilderness encounter, or a druid's sanctum with rather more dangerous residents than expected, this hatchling brings an immediate sense of threat — small in stature but enormous in menace. It doubles brilliantly as a display piece for adventurers who want something different on their shelf: a monster caught at its most dangerous first moment.
A great choice for adventurers who:
- Need a vivid encounter piece for dinosaur nesting grounds or jungle ruins
- Want to represent a ranger's beast companion in its early days
- Are building a prehistoric or lost-world themed encounter table
- Collect unusual or characterful creature miniatures for display
- Run sessions featuring druidic wildlife sanctuaries or dinosaur-herding factions
Encounter Hook: The party was hired to retrieve a clutch of eggs from a long-abandoned raptor nest deep in the jungle — a collector's commission, supposedly simple. When they arrive, they find the eggs have already begun to hatch. The first hatchling has its jaws around the ankle of their guide, and from deeper in the nest come more cracking sounds.
Details
This miniature is supplied unpainted and unassembled where applicable, on a medium 25.5mm round base as shown. The sculpt is by Epic Miniatures (reference #6766) and is produced at 32mm scale. Fine surface detail — including the cracked eggshell texture, scattered nest debris, and the hatchling's skin — holds up well to drybrushing and layered painting techniques.
