This Dark Altar is a centrepiece scatter terrain piece designed to anchor a scene with dread. Rising from a tiered stone platform, the altar itself is fronted with sweeping swirling relief carvings and flanked by skull-topped columns. Bone-like curved horns arch overhead, framing a grim collection of ritual offerings — candles, potions, and skulls arranged as though a ceremony was interrupted only moments ago. Every surface speaks of dark devotion and deliberate menace.
On the tabletop, this piece does serious narrative work. It signals to players that whoever — or whatever — holds power in this space is not subtle about it. Whether it serves a death cult, a necromancer's sanctum, a demon-worshipping warband, or a corrupted temple, the Dark Altar transforms any room tile or battle mat from a backdrop into a location with genuine story weight. Equally at home in a diorama or display cabinet, it rewards careful painting with its layered detail and textured stonework.
Perfect for adventurers who:
- Need a centrepiece terrain piece that earns its place on the battle map
- Are running encounters in corrupted temples, necromancer lairs, or cult hideouts
- Want a display or diorama focal point with strong narrative character
- Enjoy painting detailed stonework, skulls, and atmospheric scatter terrain
Encounter Hook:
The party enters the inner sanctum to find three cultists mid-ritual, their chanting rising in pitch as the altar's carvings begin to glow a sickly violet — something on the other side is already answering the call, and the players have precious few rounds to disrupt the summoning before the rift tears open.
