The Crypt Skeleton is one of fantasy gaming's most recognisable threats — but this sculpt from The Toadstool Weaver gives the classic undead warrior a character all its own. Rather than the bare-bones (quite literally) horror trope, this skeleton tells a story: a fragment of chainmail clings to one shoulder, tattered cloth hangs from a leather belt, and dried sinew still wraps the bones of its arms and legs. Whatever this thing was in life, it wasn't forgotten without a fight.

The pose captures that unsettling mid-lurch that skeletons do so well — one hand reaching forward with clawed intent, the other flung out to the side, jaw agape in a silent snarl. The glowing amber eye sockets give painters a superb focal point, and the layered decay across armour, cloth, and bone offers a wealth of techniques to explore — from heavy washes into recesses to OSL on those eerie eyes. Whether you're batch-painting a horde for a graveyard encounter or lavishing attention on a single, characterful undead, this sculpt rewards both approaches.

This is variation 6 in The Toadstool Weaver's Crypt Skeleton line — adventurers building out a crypt encounter may want to collect multiple variations for a suitably shambling, eclectic warband of the once-living.

  • Adventurers running undead-heavy campaigns who want variety in their skeleton encounters
  • Painters who enjoy layered decay — bone, cloth, leather and corroded metal all in one sculpt
  • DMs populating crypts, mausoleums, battlefields and barrow mounds
  • Collectors building atmospheric graveyard dioramas or display shelves

Encounter Hook
The party descends into the ancestral crypt of House Valorian, torches guttering in the dead air. They've cleared three chambers — but this one is different. A single skeleton stands at the far end, motionless, head bowed. As the rogue steps forward, its jaw drops, amber light ignites in the empty sockets, and it lurches towards them with one arm outstretched — wearing what remains of a soldier's uniform. Someone in the party recognises the insignia. That's when the DM grins.
