Some tyrants conquer with steel. This one conquers with ledgers, leverage, and the slow suffocation of everyone who owes him money. The Corrupt King sits enthroned not on carved marble but on bulging sacks of coin, a fortune hoarded beneath him like a dragon on its hoard — except dragons have the decency to be honest about what they are. He wears the trappings of noble office: a ruffled collar, layered robes, heavy chain of office — all slightly too fine for a man who smells of back-room deals and cancelled debts. In each hand he holds the tools of his trade: a short blade in one and a sceptre in the other, a smile on his broad face that never quite reaches his eyes.

The sculpt is richly detailed throughout. The bags of coin beneath him are individually textured, their knotted necks and bulging forms catching light beautifully once painted. Loose coins scatter across the base in a wide carpet of wealth, making this a genuinely characterful scenic piece that tells a whole story before a single word of dialogue is spoken. The rear of the sculpt is equally considered, with the rough-hewn texture of his improvised throne visible in full.

As a display piece, the Corrupt King rewards patient painters — there is tremendous variation of surface here, from the soft folds of cloth to the hard geometry of coins to the fleshy, self-satisfied face of a man who has never once gone hungry.
