Kobolds are so often dismissed as the throwaway opener to a dungeon crawl — a few crossbow bolts, a pit trap, and a quick short rest. The Commander Kobold Shield is here to remind your players exactly why that assumption is dangerous. This sculpt from Epic Miniatures depicts a kobold warrior who has clearly survived long enough to earn some serious kit: a full set of battered but functional plate armour, complete with layered pauldrons, riveted chest protection, and articulated leg guards, finished off with clawed feet that suggest no cobbler in the Underdark was getting anywhere near this one.
What really sets this commander apart are the twin round shields — one gripped in each clawed hand — held low and wide in a stance that reads as experienced, aggressive, and ready. The pose is wide-legged and dynamic, caught mid-advance, the kind of body language that says this kobold has seen a lot of adventuring parties and survived them all. A crest of bony spines rises from the helmet, adding an almost ceremonial authority to what might otherwise just be a well-armoured lizard. Rope lashings and a clutch of spare bolts at the waist hint at a survivor's pragmatism beneath the military bearing.
The render shows a medium-sized miniature with the scale reference of a standard 32mm figure, confirming this fits naturally alongside a standard D&D encounter group without towering over the party — though it will absolutely command attention on the table.
This miniature works especially well for adventurers who:
- Want a kobold that demands to be taken seriously as a tactical threat
- Are building out a kobold warband with a credible chain of command
- Need a standout enemy for a dungeon or Underdark encounter
- Fancy a characterful painting project with plenty of armour detail to work with
- Play or DM campaigns where kobolds have been underestimated one too many times
Encounter Hook: The party has been hired to clear a flooded mineshaft that a kobold clan has occupied for six months. They expect easy work. What they find instead is a fortified choke point, a pair of crossbow teams in the rafters, and a Commander Kobold Shield standing in the only corridor forward — shields raised, bony crest gleaming in the lamplight, absolutely not moving. The kobold speaks first: "You want to leave now. I am giving you the chance."
