This Clock Mimic from Great Grimoire is a wonderfully sinister twist on the classic mimic trope. Sculpted in two distinct states — one showing a pristine, fully intact grandfather clock with Roman numerals, an elegant pendulum, and baroque architectural detailing, and the other revealing the horror within as the casing bursts apart to expose curved horns, barbed spines, a serpentine tongue, and a clutch of grasping claws — this piece works brilliantly as both a dungeon scatter piece and a reveal moment at the table. The contrast between the two sculpts is superb: one is an entirely convincing piece of antique furniture, the other is pure chaos.
Whether you set the intact clock on your dungeon tiles for atmosphere and swap it for the revealed form mid-encounter, or display both side by side as a collector's pair, this miniature earns its place in any collection. Mimics have always been a DM's best tool for paranoia — and a clock mimic in a haunted manor or wizard's tower is a particularly inspired deployment of that tradition.
Perfect for adventurers who:
- Run haunted mansion, wizard tower, or gothic horror encounters
- Want scatter terrain that doubles as a monster reveal piece
- Enjoy painting projects with strong contrasting detail — ornate woodwork versus visceral creature texture
- Collect mimic variants or creature-in-disguise miniatures
- Are building a Ravenloft or dark fantasy campaign setting
Encounter Hook:
The adventurers have been sent to retrieve a silver locket from the estate of a long-dead archmage. The manor is cold and silent — but the study is immaculate, and in the corner stands a grandfather clock, still ticking. As the rogue reaches for the cabinet beside it, the clock strikes the hour. And keeps striking. And the hands begin to move in entirely the wrong direction.
