The Carrion Snail is one of those creatures that rewards a double-take. At first glance, it might read as an oversized gastropod — slug-like, low-slung, slow. Then the details land: a horned demon skull fused into its shell, rings of jagged teeth gaping wide from its body cavity, writhing tentacles tipped with bulbous sensory nodes, and spines bristling along its undercarriage. This is not a snail that scavenges the dead. This is the thing that made them dead.

Sculpted by Epic Miniatures, this piece sits on a large 51mm base and fills every millimetre of it. The mass of the creature is impressive — a dense, segmented body coiled and heaving forward — while the detail work on the skull-shell, the ringed tooth-maw, and the trailing tentacles rewards painters who enjoy layered, organic textures. Wet blending the fleshy body against stark bone highlights, or picking out the glistening quality of each tentacle node, would make this a genuinely compelling project on the desk as much as a threatening presence on the board.

The choice of a decorative base or plain base lets you tailor this creature to your table — whether you want it emerging from a Underdark cavern floor with sculpted detail beneath it, or mounted clean on a base you texture yourself to match your campaign's setting.

Brilliant for adventurers who:

  • Run aberration-heavy Underdark encounters and want a creature with genuine visual dread
  • Love painting organic, grotesque sculpts with layered flesh, bone, and slime textures
  • Need a Large-sized monstrosity to anchor a wandering monster encounter or lair dressing
  • Want a display piece that draws the eye on a shelf or painting competition entry board
  • Are building out a sewers, marshland, or deep cavern environment with its own horror ecology

Encounter Hook

The party has been tracking a missing trader through the lower tunnels — but all they find is a trail of empty boots, stripped clean, and a low rasping sound echoing ahead. When their torchlight catches the gleam of a horned skull sliding towards them across the stone, they realise the skull is moving — and the thing wearing it opens a second mouth they hadn't seen coming.
