This capybara character miniature from La Louve 3D is one of those sculpts that stops a painting desk in its tracks. Dressed in a buttoned hooded cloak with a neat drawstring at the collar, this rotund little creature carries a full wicker basket brimming with foraged goods — mushrooms and leafy produce tucked in with obvious care. The cloak falls to just above the ankles, revealing scaled, taloned feet that hint at something a little more fantastical than your average woodland wanderer. Small horns peek out from beneath the hood, and the expression is magnificently placid — the face of a being that has seen much and chosen, wisely, to remain calm about all of it.

The sculpt rewards careful painting. The woven texture of the basket is beautifully realised, the button detail down the coat front is sharp and distinct, and the contrast between the smooth cloak fabric and the textured fur of the arms and face gives painters plenty of opportunity to show off their technique. It offers no explanation. It simply asks, in a measured and entirely unhurried voice, whether anyone in the group knows the way to the Mill at Brenwhistle — and whether they'd like to walk together, since the forest is, as it has been lately, a little strange after dark.
