Captain Dreadhelm is a gloriously grim centrepiece for any nautical or horror-tinged campaign. This skeletal pirate captain stands at the ship's wheel mid-battle, one bony hand gripping the helm and the other raising a broad cutlass overhead. His tricorn hat is adorned with a skull badge, and a small bird — a parrot, by the look of it — perches on the brim as if equally unbothered by death. His long coat billows around him, tattered and dramatic, and ghostly tendrils of spectral energy coil up from beneath him, anchoring the sculpt to a detailed wooden-deck base complete with rope and a ship's wheel pedestal. There's a kinetic energy to the pose — this isn't a captain who has accepted his fate, this is a captain who has taken death by the throat and kept right on sailing.
The detail work here is exceptional: exposed skeletal hands and jaw sit alongside layers of fabric, buckles, bandoliers, and epaulettes, giving painters a wonderfully varied surface to work across. Whether you're drybrushing bleached bone, glazing spectral greens into the ghostly wisps, or picking out tarnished gold trim on the coat, Dreadhelm rewards time at the brush. As a display piece he's a natural focal point; on the table he commands attention before a single dice has been rolled.
Particularly well-suited for adventurers who:
- Run nautical campaigns or Ghosts of Saltmarsh-style sea adventures
- Need a memorable undead BBEG for a cursed ship or ghost fleet encounter
- Want a showpiece miniature that pulls double duty as a display figure
- Love painting undead characters with rich textural variety
- Are building out a ghost ship crew or haunted harbour scene
Encounter Hook: The party's vessel is becalmed at midnight when the fog rolls in and a galleon with no living lights emerges from the dark. At its wheel stands a figure in a tricorn hat who hasn't drawn breath in two centuries — and he's already named the price for safe passage. Captain Dreadhelm doesn't negotiate twice.
