The Canoloth is one of the most viscerally unsettling members of the yugoloth family — a squat, massively built fiend encased in heavy plate-like armour that seems to have grown from its hide rather than been forged for it. This sculpt from Epic Miniatures captures that wrongness brilliantly. The creature hunches forward with predatory weight, its broad armoured shoulders bristling with bone spurs, its thick legs braced as though coiled to lunge. Reaching from beneath that armoured bulk is a barbed, segmented tongue — curled and tipped with wicked spines — the Canoloth's most notorious feature and the one no prey ever forgets.
The scenic base reinforces the creature's unstoppable nature: cracked stone or ice fractures beneath its claws, the ground itself yielding to something that does not walk so much as advance. Every surface of the sculpt rewards a painter — the contrast between the riveted, panel-lined armour and the textured, hide-like skin beneath it offers real scope for layering techniques. Bring out the armour in tarnished iron, gloss the tongue in sickly wet tones, and let the base tell the story of where this thing has just been.
This is a large miniature on a 51mm base, giving it a genuine table presence that marks it out as a serious encounter piece — not something the party stumbles past, but something that stops the session cold.
Well-suited for adventurers who:
- Run yugoloth-heavy fiend encounters in the Abyss, Avernus, or the Blood War's front lines
- Need a CR 8 tracker or guardian that feels genuinely threatening on the tabletop
- Want a centrepiece monster with strong armour and organic texture detail for painting
- Are building a Planescape or fiendish faction and need their muscle represented
- Collect fiend miniatures and want something beyond the usual demon or devil archetypes
Encounter Hook
The party has crossed the yugoloth who hired them — or perhaps they simply know something a very powerful patron doesn't want known. Three days into their journey back, they hear it: a wet, rhythmic dragging sound in the dark behind them, growing closer each hour. The Canoloth doesn't ambush. It closes the distance. It waits until they are tired. Then it strikes — tongue first, pinning the cleric to the nearest wall before the rogue can shout a warning.
