The Bodak is one of D&D's most unsettling undead — a humanoid husk warped beyond recognition by Abyssal corruption. This sculpt by The Toadstool Weaver captures that wrongness superbly: the elongated, featureless skull tapers to a sharp beak-like protrusion where a face should be, hollow eye sockets glow with a faint, malevolent light, and the lean, muscular body hangs with an unnatural stillness. Clawed fingers curl at its sides, ready to reach. There is no weapon here — the Bodak's most lethal tool is its gaze.
The digital render shows the figure in a forward-facing, menacing stance — arms slightly raised and fingers splayed, conveying the creeping inevitability of its advance. The smooth, pallid skin texture contrasts with the deep shadows around the face, making it a rewarding subject for painters who want to explore OSL (Object Source Lighting) from those glowing eyes, or a sickly desaturated skin palette that speaks of something no longer quite alive.
As a 32mm miniature, the Bodak sits comfortably alongside standard D&D encounter pieces and makes an evocative solo encounter figure or a centrepiece for a small undead warband.
Particularly well-suited to adventurers who:
- Run campaigns that venture into the Abyss, the Shadowfell, or demon-touched ruins
- Want an undead encounter that isn't a skeleton or zombie — something genuinely unsettling
- Are looking for a painting project with strong contrast and atmospheric potential
- Collect undead miniatures for display as well as gaming
Encounter Hook: The party has been hired to investigate a village where three farmers died in their fields overnight — no wounds, no signs of struggle, just expressions of abject terror frozen on their faces. As the adventurers search the abandoned farmstead at dusk, something moves at the tree line: tall, pale, and utterly silent, its hollow gaze sweeping toward them with the patience of something that has already forgotten what it means to hurry.
