This sculpt from Epic Miniatures captures a gaunt, long-coated figure in the mould of a Victorian monster hunter — or, depending on what your Dungeon Master has planned, a monster in a very convincing coat. He wears a weathered top hat and a heavy overcoat with a caped collar, his belt laden with pouches and tools of a trade that doesn't bear too close an examination. In his right hand he raises a finely detailed square lantern; in his left he grips a chain. That chain leads to the beast.

The wolf is anything but tame. Despite the spiked collar and iron links, it crouches low in an aggressive posture — haunches raised, head down, claws splayed. Rows of bony spines run along its back and hindquarters, and its heavy muzzle is twisted in a snarl. This is no companion animal; this is something leashed out of sheer will, and you sense the leash could go at any moment. Viewed from behind, the spines across the wolf's body and the warden's flowing coat and cape create a striking silhouette that rewards a skilled painter from every angle.

Together the pair form a single cohesive scene on a 25.5mm medium oval base — the kind of miniature that commands a section of the display shelf all by itself, or drops onto the gaming table and immediately makes the players nervous.

This miniature is well suited to adventurers who:

  • Run gothic horror campaigns set in Ravenloft, Barovia, or fog-wreathed urban settings
  • Need a morally ambiguous NPC — a city watchman, a beast handler, or a cult enforcer
  • Want to represent a Ranger or Monster Hunter with an unusual beast companion
  • Are building an atmospheric display piece that showcases both figure and creature sculpting
  • Enjoy miniatures with strong narrative charge — pairs where the story is written into the pose

Encounter Hook

The players are moving through a locked-down city district when they hear it — a slow rhythmic clank of chain links and the scrape of claws on wet stone. Around the corner comes a lean figure in a top hat, swinging a lantern at shoulder height. Behind him, barely restrained, is the wolf. The warden doesn't slow his pace. He simply says: "After curfew. That's a problem." He hasn't yet let go of the chain — but his grip looks deliberate rather than tight.
