This is no ordinary piece of cemetery furniture. The Animated Coffin is a grotesque undead construct: a wooden funeral casket propelled by six (or more) segmented, claw-tipped spider legs, its lid wrenched open to reveal the desiccated skeletal occupant within — reaching outward with grasping, clawed fingers and a skull twisted into something between a leer and a scream. The wood grain is rendered in fine detail across the coffin's panels, and the articulated legs are sculpted with knuckle-like joints and blade-edged tips that make the whole thing look horribly organic despite being made of timber and bone. It's the kind of miniature that makes players visibly uncomfortable when you place it on the table — which is precisely the point.
As a Dungeon Master's tool, the Animated Coffin sits in a glorious grey area between Construct and Undead — a cursed object animated by dark necromancy, equally at home in a haunted crypt, a Ravenloft graveyard, or as the centrepiece of a morbid collector's cabinet encounter. The sculpt is equally compelling as a display piece: the interplay of skeletal horror and coffin-furniture wrongness gives painters a genuinely unusual canvas to work with.
Perfect for adventurers who:
- Want a truly unsettling encounter monster that stops the table in its tracks
- Are building a Ravenloft, gothic horror, or haunted graveyard campaign arc
- Love painting unusual subjects with wood, bone, and aged metal tones
- Collect display miniatures that spark conversation on a shelf
Encounter Hook:
The party has been hired to retrieve a noble's body from a ransacked cemetery — but when they locate the coffin, it lurches upright on chitinous legs, the lid snapping open to reveal the animated corpse within, reaching for the nearest throat. Whatever raised it is still watching from the tree line.
Details
Supplied at 32mm scale. The miniature arrives ready for priming and painting, or can be used straight from the box as a compelling unpainted display piece. Bases and models are supplied as separate pieces and can be attached with a small amount of superglue — note that many sculpts are designed to interact with their bases, so we recommend keeping them together for the best presentation.
