Ancient Witch (Baba Yaga) by DM Stash

Baba Yaga is one of folklore's most enduring figures of dread — not a simple witch, but something older and stranger, a creature of bargains and hunger who exists at the threshold between the mortal world and whatever lies beyond it. DM Stash's interpretation captures that unsettling quality with extraordinary detail. She stands atop her cracked wooden mortar barrel, taloned bird-like legs gripping its rim, robes layered with feathers, skulls, dangling charms and the suggestion of faces half-glimpsed in the fabric. Her gnarled staff rises high, its tip splayed into something between antlers and dead branches, while her posture — hunched, leaning forward, full of coiled intent — speaks of age without frailty and power without mercy.

The scenic decorative base is integral to the sculpt's character: the mortar barrel sits broken and tilted on a rubble-strewn ground scattered with bones and debris, as though she has just landed — or is about to depart. The level of surface texture across the robes, bark-like staff, and the barrel itself gives painters a wealth of recesses and raised details to work with, from dry-brushed feathers to individually picked-out bone charms. This is a miniature that rewards every layer of paint you put into it.

Whether you run her as a Dungeon Master's most dangerous non-player character — a hag of terrible age who trades in secrets and souls — or place her on a display shelf as a showpiece of folklore-inspired fantasy sculpture, Baba Yaga commands attention the moment she hits the table.

This miniature suits adventurers who:

• Need a commanding, lore-rich hag BBEG for a fairytale or dark folklore campaign
• Want a showpiece centrepiece for an encounter with an ancient and unknowable power
• Enjoy painting complex textures — feathers, bones, weathered wood and ragged cloth
• Are building out a coven, a Feywild encounter, or a Ravenloft session with real atmosphere

Encounter Hook

The party follows a trail of child-sized footprints into the deep forest, where the trees grow close and the light turns grey. At a clearing's edge, a cracked barrel sits silent in the mud — and then it moves. She has been watching since they crossed the first root. She knows why they've come. She has a price. She always has a price.
