Tyranny of Dragons Campaign Log - Session 0 & 1 Tyranny of Dragons Campaign Log - Session 0 & 1

Hello and Welcome!

We've started a campaign and we would like to briefly chronicle the campaign here on our blog our (mostly) weekly sessions of how the games carry on and what is happening to the characters. Our idea is that it is a bit of fun to document what is going on and get a bit more involved with the community and genre and ideally include pictures of how our items are used in the campaign (because, let's be honest, games are more fun with minis and other items if possible!).

So of course it goes without saying that these posts will contain spoilers, so if you are playing the same campaign, then please tread carefully reading these posts as to not ruin your own gaming experience!

We are playing Tyranny of Dragons (the full quest which includes Hoard of the Dragon Queen and Rise of Tiamat) and its is run by our mate Adam as the DM.

As is important for all longer commitment games, it is important to have a session 0 to establish "house rules" and ensure there is clarity on the themes and other elements expected to be encountered. We are a small group actually (just Adam and myself Pete) so our Session 0 was quite quick and we easily covered the basic elements and were aligned on rules and expectations so we are all squared away there.

The main activity we did though on Session 0 was create the characters. As I am the player, we agreed that I would play 3 player characters. So I went with the following:

  • Torsion - Hill Dwarf Life Domain Cleric
  • Dafnae - High Elf Rogue
  • Chard - Tiefling Fighter

We are using D&D Beyond to manage the Campaign and Characters in the background so we used the app to build them but we manually rolled the stats. We did 4d6 and used the highest three and then assigned them to stats and picked the rest of the character elements. And while we are providing the minis and modular terrain (where applicable), Adam is preparing all of the 2D material we are using.

I'll post separate post on each character to go into more details on each one.

Then we had Session 1 where we started off the different character hooks. Without going into too much detail here, Adam and I agreed on the starting back stories from the different initial campaign hooks so he could plan.

The heroes found themselves all joined up on the same Caravan en-route to the town of Greenest which the party found quickly was under siege by a Shadowy dragon figure in the sky and a whole army of Kobolds and Cultists.

The adventures, following their character hooks, rushed in to help the besieged villagers and quickly ran across a threatened family which they were able to save and then started to escort to the Keep in the middle of the town.

There were a few encounters of Kobolds and simple Cultists which the heroes were able to both defeat in combat, or, in one case, bluff past. But, they did get a little battle worn.

They made it safely to the Keep and found refuge.

After helping some of the injured villagers, they were sent on a quest to try to save a few more villagers still in the town under attack and they went out via the secret tunnel.

The Heroes were able to quietly make it out of the tunnel to the Southern most part of the town and dispatch the patrol of Kobolds and Cultists without allowing them to call for reinforcements. They secured the secret entrance to the tunnel and were about to begin their search for more villagers to save.

And this is where Session 1 ended.

Let's see what Torsion, Dafnae, and Chard will be able to do next!

We'll try to keep these posts updated regularly and include some photos of the team in action as we carry on with the sessions.

Happy continued gaming and painting!

-Pete (with Mitz & Simz & now also Torsion, Dafnae, & Chard)
