At first glance it reads as a working animal — broad-chested, heavily muscled, with the thick feathering of a true draught breed cascading over each hoof. But the detail tells a darker story: a ram's skull lies crushed beneath one foot, the mane flows in heavy, almost organic ropes, and the downward tilt of the head carries something between wariness and menace. This is a horse that has been somewhere, and whatever it found there changed it.

The sculpt captures the raw physicality of a heavy horse breed beautifully — layered muscle across the shoulder and haunch, the distinct crest of a stallion's neck, and feathering that has genuine flow and weight to it. The scenic oval base integrates naturally with the pose, grounding the model with cracked earth and that quietly ominous skull detail. Painters will find rich opportunities here: deep washes to pick out the feathering texture, layered highlighting on the flanks to bring out the muscle definition, and the base offering a small but satisfying focal point to contrast against the horse itself.

Available with your choice of base — the decorative scenic base with the skull detail, a plain round base for a cleaner look, or no base at all for basing purists who prefer to work from scratch.

Well suited for adventurers who:

Need a mount with genuine character and presence for a wilderness or dark fantasy campaign

Want a beast encounter that doesn't read as a stock animal — something their players will notice

Are looking for a display-worthy animal sculpt to paint and showcase alongside a mounted warrior or druid

DM a Ravenloft, Shadowfell, or folklore-inflected setting where animals carry an edge of the uncanny

Encounter Hook

The party's ranger spots the horse grazing alone on the road to the village — no saddle, no rider, no brand. It allows approach, even accepts a handful of grain from the paladin. But when the cleric leans down to examine the fresh skull half-buried in its hoof prints, the horse raises its head and holds eye contact for just a moment too long. Something is wrong here. The question is whether the horse is the danger, or whether it followed something out of the dark to warn them.

Details

32mm scale

Sculpted by Mia Kay M3DM

Supplied unpainted and unprimed

Base options: decorative scenic base (£5.00), plain base (£4.50), or no base (£4.00)

Sculpted by Mia Kay M3DM — visit their collection to explore more of their work.

Pairs well with beast encounters and Ravenloft gothic campaigns — or explore more from Mia Kay M3DM.

Two cats.
